Are you having problems with Spam emails, like thousands of us we receive a few spam emails everyday in our email account. But if you don’t have any spam email protection you are more likely to receive hundreds of spam emails every week, so what can you do about this?

The first thing to do is to get anti-spam software installed on your computer this does help a lot and can prevent you from receiving the hundreds of emails you don’t want. Most email accounts now have anti-spam software included but there are some when this is not an option, you just have to press the Junk button when you receive junk emails this does reduce them but no where as much as other email account operators. An account like AOL has anti-spam software on your email account so when and if you do receive these emails they go directly into the Spam box. This is a good thing but you do have to check if frequently as some emails that aren’t spam do make there way into the box, the easy thing to do it click on the email and click on the button Not Spam, this tells AOL that it isn’t spam and from then onwards that email address will turn up in your email inbox not your box. This is called email filtering and accounts like Hotmail, Yahoo and Google all use this kind of software to help their users get the most out of their email account.

Microsoft Outlook 2003 and 2007 have an automatic protection which catches spam and places into a junk email box, this sometimes can catch regular emails too but it defiantly helps you would just need to check the spam box.

Other ways to help you stop unwanted spam getting into your email account inbox is to choose a long email address which is a combination of letters and numbers with punctuation marks. Don’t click on links on spam emails as this will allow more to affect you, as well as don’t open spam attachments, don’t reply to spam emails, only give your main email address to your friends and family and don’t post it on your own website or on internet directories, don’t buy products, services or donate to charity via emails if more people take this action the less spammers will send, if you use a spam filter report it that gets to your inbox so the filter can block it as spam next time one is sent and finally if you do have junk folders check them regularly as some regular email may get through.

If you take the precautions shown above you have a very good chance of reducing the spam reaching your regular inbox, the more people who do this and everyone doesn’t respond to the spam emails, links and attachments the more likely spammers are to stop sending these emails. We all need to fight spam today!

A recent report showed that over 82% of all US email is spam. With about 980 million email accounts around the world, it would be interesting to see what the world wide spam percentage is. Spam is becoming more and more insistent and with spammers teaming up with virus writers, the situation is growing increasingly malicious. And for 114,000 new iPad owners, they may now find unwanted solicitations in their emails, because AT&T accidentally released email address of the iPad owners. On the list were notable people such as Rahm Emanuel, Diane Sawyer and a few other worldwide known personalities.

Software technicians work non-stop to block, combat and inform the public of new spam tactics. One such tactic is the “Literary and Poetry” spam. People open their emails to find entire chapters of books or entire poems in the email body. This has left quite a few people scratching their heads. The reason why spammers are now using this approach is it allows them to bypass spam filters.

Spammers never use their own email address, but will typical have thousands if not millions of disposable accounts. They can send spam out to millions upon millions of emails within minutes. The use of open proxies are often used to hide the spammer’s location or the will take control of a host computer (a victim’s computer filled with the right malware, viruses and worms) and send out mass spam. All the while, it remains completely undetected. With such a hit and run technique is can be very difficult to track down spammers. When they are found fines and/or jail time is common punishment.

There are numerous tricks that people can use that can off-set the amount of spam they receive. Most if not all email providers have their own encryption and security software to minimize spam. Then of course there are spam filters as well as white and black lists that individuals can use to decrease spam. Anti-virus software usually has spam guard features that can assist. Some anti-spam methods work better than others, so it’s always best to research to find the best one that works for your needs.

Spam is not just annoying adult related ads or unreadable gibberish. Some spam is extremely dangerous and people have had their banking accounts wipe out, credit cards maxed out and have suffered identify theft. Identify theft is one of the hardest thing to get rid of. It can be almost impossible to regain your identity. A spammer only needs a little bit of information about you to receive all of your records. One dangerous type of spam is phishing. A phishing spam will look just like the original website, like PayPal. It will ask you to login to verify information, as soon as you login; the sender of the email now has access to your PayPal and bank account. Then there is the Nigerian type spam, to where the sender will use a convincing sad story over the course of time to get you to send or donate money.

There are millions of heartbreaking stories of people who have been victims of spam. The best way to avoid being a victim is never click a link of someone you don’t know. Also make sure your spam exchange provider has a good spam filter and get a good anti-spam blocker from a reputable Anti-virus company. Plus stay on top of all the new spam trends. These spammers are becoming more sophisticated and now that they have partnered up with virus writers; spam is may just get a brand new face. Don’t be caught unaware.

Many small business owners are concerned about business continuity and ensuring that their staff remains productive during work hours. One of the biggest risks to productivity in the work place is the threat of viruses, worms and other malicious activities that circulate around the Internet and threaten our corporate and home networks daily. Most viruses are spread via email and most are not written to cause damage to a personal computer, but specifically to disrupt network services, or simply flood your email services with thousands of these emails that spread the virus around to your business partners, staff and other contacts.

The “Onion Approach,” or layering of your security, which protects your network and PC from the infiltration of worms and other viruses, is the best way to ensure that your technology systems remain functional and your staff productive.

The inside layer is to protect your network and workstations. This can be done by using an antivirus solution that offers complete corporate protection. I recommend the corporate editions by Symantec, Trend Micro or McAfee. Any of these companies can ensure your network and workstations are protected. This however is the last defense to ensure your network is protected.

The next layer is to prevent viruses from even entering your network. This can be done with a firewall solution that offers a complete Unified Threat Management system. Firewall solutions that offer UTM provide the small business network with a gateway antivirus solution, which stops viruses at the Internet router. These firewalls mean an investment in superior technology. One example of a firewall solution that offers complete protection is SonicWALL and their solutions are priced to bring value to the small business owner. If you can prevent one virus from entering your network and therefore keep your systems protected and your staff productive then that is an investment worth far more than its price tag of a few hundred dollars.

The next and equally important layer is to subscribe to a SPAM filtering service, a great example of this type of service is SingleFin out of Southern California. This service filters or cleans all of your email before it is sent to your email server. SPAM and Virus based emails are held at the filtering server until you decide what you wish to do with them. SingleFin’s service is 100% web based so therefore you do not have to purchase any additional equipment to provide this service to you, and it offers your first 10 seats at no charge. The added bonus to a service like this is that your internet connection and bandwidth are freed up to perform your business functions instead of receiving virus type emails.

Having a great computer consulting company is critical in assisting you with this type of service. They will have all the certifications to ensure that it is done correctly with minimal disruption to your business. A qualified systems engineer will also ensure that your antivirus systems are updating properly and scanning files effectively. Not having a great update policy that is followed carefully by an IT professional is almost as bad as having no protection at all.

I always hear from small business owners: “What is the cost for this protection?” or “It must be pricey?” To totally protect your network and keep you staff productive will cost your company about $200.00 per month. Isn’t your business network and staff productivity worth $200.00 per month? Imagine the cost of your company’s computer system being down for one complete working day with no email? Staff not being able to use their systems to get out quotes, sales, drawings or business correspondence? What is the true cost to downtime? The reality is that downtime will cost far more than the wiser investment in preventing that downtime with the right technology. Get that technology now and take the worry about your computer’s vulnerability out of your day.

Who Cooked This!? (How did it all start?) The modern meaning of the word “spam” has nothing to do with spiced ham. In the early 1990’s, a skit by British comedy group Monty Python led to the word’s common usage. “The SPAM Skit” follows a couple struggling to order dinner from a menu consisting entirely of Hormel’s canned ham.

Repetition is key to the skit’s hilarity. The actors cram the word “SPAM” into the 2.5 minute skit more than 104 times! This flood prompted Usenet readers to call unwanted newsgroup postings “spam.” The name stuck.

Spammers soon focused on e-mail, and the terminology moved with them. Today, the word has come out of technical obscurity. Now, “spam” is the common term for “Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail”, or “UCE.”

Why Does Bad Spam Happen to Good People? Chances are, you’ve been spammed before. Somehow, your e-mail address has found it’s way into the hands of a spammer, and your inbox is suffering the consequences. How does this happen? There are several possibilities.

Backstabbing Businesses

Businesses often keep lists of their customers’ e-mail addresses. This is a completely legitimate practice and, usually, nothing bad comes of it. Sometimes though, the temptation to make a quick buck is too great, and these lists are sold or rented to outside advertisers. The result? A lot of unsolicited e-mail, and a serious breach of trust.

Random Address Generation

Computer programs called random address generators simply “guess” e-mail addresses. Over 100 million hotmail addresses exist – how hard could it be to guess some of them? Unfortunately for many unsuspecting netizens – not too hard. Many spammers also guess at “standard” addresses, like “support@yourdomain.com”, “info@yourdomain.com”, and “billing@yourdomain.com.”

Web Spiders

Today’s most insidious list-gathering tools are web spiders. All of the major search engines spider the web, saving information about each page. Spammers use tools that also spider the web, but save any e-mail address they come across. Your personal web page lists your e-mail address? Prepare for an onslaught!

Chat Room Harvesting

ISP’s offer vastly popular chat rooms where users are known only by their screen names. Of course, spammers know that your screen name is the first part of your e-mail address. Why waste time guessing e-mail addresses when a few hours of lurking in a chat room can net a list of actively-used addresses?

The Poor Man’s Bad Marketing Idea

It didn’t work for the phone companies, and it won’t work for e-mail marketers. But, some spammers still keep their own friends-and-family-style e-mail lists. Compiled from the addresses of other known spammers, and people or businesses that the owner has come across in the past, these lists are still illegitimate. Why? Only you can give someone permission to send you e-mail. A friend-of-a-friend’s permission won’t cut it.

Stop The Flood to Your Inbox

Already drowning in spam? Try using your e-mail client’s filters – many provide a way to block specific e-mail addresses. Each time you’re spammed, block the sender’s address. Spammers skip from address to address, and you may be on many lists, but this method will at least slow the flow.

Also, use more than one e-mail address, and keep one “clean.” Many netizens find that this technique turns the spam flood into a trickle. Use one address for only spam-safe activities like e-mailing your friends, or signing on with trustworthy businesses. Never use your clean address on the web! Get a free address to use on the web and in chat rooms.

If nothing else helps, consider changing screen names, or opening an entirely new e-mail account. When you do, you’ll start with a clean, spam-free slate. This time, protect your e-mail address!

Stay Off Spammed Lists in the Future

Want to surf the web without getting sucked into the spam-flood? Prevention is your best policy. Don’t use an easy-to-guess e-mail address. Keep your address clean by not using it for spam-centric activities. Don’t post it on any web pages, and don’t use it in chat rooms or newsgroups.

Before giving your clean e-mail address to a business, check the company out. Are sections of its user agreement dedicated to anti-spam rules? Does a privacy policy explain exactly what will be done with your address? The most considerate companies also post an anti-spam policy written in plain English, so you can be absolutely sure of what you’re getting into.

Think You’re Not a Spammer? Be Sure. Many a first-time marketer has inadvertently spammed his audience. The first several hundred complaints and some nasty phone messages usually stop him in his tracks. But by then, the spammer may be faced with cleanup bills from his ISP, and a bad reputation that it’s not easy to overcome.

The best way to avoid this situation is to have a clear understanding of what spam is: If anyone who receives your mass e-mails did not specifically ask to hear from you, then you are spamming them.

Stick with your gut. Don’t buy a million addresses for $10, no matter how much the seller swears by them! If something sounds fishy, just say no. You’ll save yourself a lot in the end.

The Final Blow

The online world is turning the tide on spam. In the end, people will stop sending spam because it stops working. Do your part: never buy from a spammer. When your business seeks out technology companies with which to work, only choose those with a staunch anti-spam stance.

Spam has a long history in both the food and e-mail sectors. This year, Hormel Foods opened a real-world museum dedicated to SPAM. While the museum does feature the Monty Python SPAM Skit, there’s no word yet on an unsolicited commercial e-mail exhibit. But, if all upstanding netizens work together, Hormel’s ham in a can will far outlive the Internet plague that is UCE.

Each day, spammers discover new routes in which they try to hack into the email inbox of other internet users. Majority of spam contains unwanted advertising but there are those that are able to transmit viruses such as spyware and adware to the computer and as a result cause many problems. Aside from that, it is very annoying for one to go to the inbox and go through a number of emails and from the entire list only one happens to be legitimate. An Exchange spam filter, which is considered effective is able to solve most email problems of this nature. The first thing an Exchange filter software has the ability to do is blocking unwanted spam on the server. In addition, they organize the emails on the folders in such a way as to ensure that the inbox does not have any unwanted material. There are a number of features one should look out for when getting a spam filter for Exchange.

One of the features of the such filter that is considered to be amongst the best is its ability to offer protection to many accounts at the same time. This means that the program can filter junk email and as such prevent it from getting into multiple email accounts. This comes in handy since one does not have to be bothered about downloading multiple programs or be worried about getting a number of software, which is very expensive for one to make sure that the multiple emails are protected.

In addition, an Exchange Server spam filter should have a picture filter feature, which is a filtering system that allows it to identify and then remove all image spam. The new junk and spam email wave is known as image spam that previously used text and now applies emails that are graphic based and includes multi media emails. The larger files of the image spam can be a problem especially when it involves slowing down servers and choking the inbox. One should ensure that the Exchange spam filter software is able to identify and remove all the picture based spam emails.

The Exchange spam filter software also has the smart filtering, which is a new technological enhancement. It is one way of including features on a filter list. It is also able to include filters, instruct the program on how to delete and filter, identify the emails to scan and those to keep and what exactly to do with the large files. This ability of the Exchange spam filter to direct filters on their role, adds a personality level to the spam filter program that one has and makes it possible to customize it in such a manner as to satisfy the preferences of the user.

Spam filters for Exchange are generally easy to use and it can therefore be used by an administrator who is not very experienced. It is more helpful if the Exchange spam filter utilizes the icons, the drop-down menus and has been arranged in a logical manner. The installation process of the Exchange spam filter should have no errors and be easy.

If you have been receiving an enormous amount of email everyday and you are already having a hard time managing all of them, then maybe you need to get a spam blocker. It lets you manage your emails and filter which ones are important, and which should go to waste.

A spam blocker is software which you can download from different websites. You can choose which one would work best for you. It is best to read reviews and user comments about the different kinds of spam blockers available for you.

A good spam blocker would be able to block 90 percent of spam emails. These emails may include attached viruses or offensive content. Spam blockers also prevent unsecure emails from entering your inbox, so that you remain protected at all times.

Such software would also be able to respond to your actions and demands. For instance, if you delete an email from a certain address even before reading it, the program remembers that activity and acts on all emails that would come from that address as spam. This eliminates the need for you to check and delete all the messages that you receive.

When you are looking for the best blocker for you, check if it is compatible with your email provider. Also, you should look at factors such as the ability to block emails, how you should set it up, as well as its price.

Yes, a spam blocker may come with a price. As opposed to a spam filter, a blocker does not allow spam to enter your email at all. A filter only creates a secondary folder in which all suspicious and unsecure mails go. There is still a risk for you to execute viruses and open offensive emails, so it is definitely worth to spend on software.

Most blockers require monthly payments. This ensures that it is updated and able to protect you and your email account at all times. Prices may vary depending on the provider, as well as on the level of protection that you would get from the software.

The one thing most people do when they go to work, wake up in the morning or head on to school do is check their emails. As a communication tool, it is one of the most efficient ones available today and we use them for almost every aspect of our lives. Our mail client is the vessel that carries all our communicae’ and while we would like it to be trouble free, this isn’t usually the case. Spam is a great problem nowadays and it pervades the entire world like some digital endemic we cannot escape from.

Coined as a derogatory term towards mass emailing and marketing, spam has now taken on new and more complex forms, with methods that boggle even some anti virus systems and find themselves in our inbox. What is a mild irritant at first can turn into something more dangerous if not treated early. This is especially so when you are in business and you need to get your emails in order. Nothing can slow your day, frustrate you, elevate your stress levels and put a clog in your business like spam. How does it get there in the first place? Well there are many ways that a spam network can get a hold of your email.

There are email sniffers out there who are dedicated worms, which track the digital network for any loose email addresses. The compile a list of literally millions of emails a day based on searches through forums, e-zines, websites, databases and collectives online. There are also worms which infect a single email address, steal the password and then retrieve their email list, which then each one gets infected, sending all the information back to a central server or a gate way in the internet where the hacker will store all his information. This is the deadly cycle of email stealing that goes on daily on the internet because spam networks will pay good money for a huge collection of emails.

These spam operators usually root themselves in countries where it is not recognised as illegal and operate from that jurisdiction, which explains why spamming is still a giant problem today. It is the sum total of the lowest common denominators of online marketing as is considered a despicable way to market goods. Most of the goods that come in spam usually are male organ enlargers or pornography, so based on the type of market that associated itself with this sort of marketing, you then know the debased level of digital existence that it belongs to. In any case, the only draw of this is the percentages.

With usually no more than a 0.1% hit rate with spam emailing, out of 20 million emails, that is still generated profit for the company. They have sophisticated technology behind them and a team of hackers, so the general advice is to get a good spam block system to get your emails in order and protect the integrity of your mail client.

Unsolicited junk e-mail or spam is an unfortunate reality that comes with the use of internet although web users are affected by it in different degrees. At times it becomes difficult for e-mail account holders to distinguish between genuine messages and spam and this makes it a constant bother to many individuals as well as business enterprises. There are several programs that have been created to block out spam from e-mail inboxes and among the main components to aid this process is what is known as a spam blocker or Exchange spam filter, which is installed within exchange servers. A spam filter for Exchange Server is capable of scanning messages that have spam keywords and spam headers. After the spam messages have been identified, the Exchange spam filter server will inform the user which mails have been treated as spam. This will significantly reduce the chances of attacks from viruses and malware.

There is an option of setting the server to block out blank senders; however this is not advised because some important documents such as read receipts do not have sender fields. The filtering process can be done without the sender knowing and this is advised because it can significantly reduce the server load. Most exchange servers have an inbuilt ORFilter or Open Relay Filter as well as a Realtime Blackhole List or RBL capability, which means that there will not be any need for any third party software for filtering spam.

The initial process is to go to the delivery settings for messages and clicking on ‘new’ so as to add another connection filter. From here, the preferred Realtime Blackhole selection will be chosen and the OK button clicked. There are some exceptions to these specifications that can be chosen by clicking on exceptions and filling in the desirable settings. There will be a warning pop out stating that a SMTP virtual server will need to be enabled for the process of filtering. One will have to go to SMTP virtual server properties and click on ‘edit’. The checkbox with ‘Apply Connection Filter’ should be checked. After clicking OK, exit completely.

There may be a need for third party spam filter software applications; however they are quite costly meaning that small enterprises and individuals will find it difficult to invest in it. In most cases though, the Exchange spam filter embedded within the exchange server is enough to block out most of the threats from spam. There is an option that can be used to store junk mail and its configuration may be done by defining a particular threshold that is based upon the SCL rating. By doing this, the system will be able to distinguish whether a message is to be put into the inbox or in a folder for junk e-mail.

The Exchange spam filter within the exchange server makes use of several combinations that are supposed to decipher the composition of messages and identify whether they are spam. It is for this reason that the configuration should be appropriately done to ensure that the spam filter within Exchange will be able to effectively carry out all the necessary procedures to keep out unsolicited e-mails. Users, who want to control or avoid spam mail, will have a better alternative by using the Exchange filter for spam emails.
